TOASTING |
|
Many people think modern chanting over rhythms
originated with Hip Hop and Rap. Not so. It started in
Jamaica, where U Roy started to voice over the
instrumental versions of his Sound System ("Mobile
Dance Hall"). This was called "Toasting"
and it became a strong style within all genres of Reggae
until the day of today!
In this portal, we apply the word
"toasting" mainly of DJ Track released prior
to the early 1980's, that is in the days of Rub a Dub as
well as Traditional Roots Rockers.

| BIG
YOUTH - Natty Universal Dread, 1973-1979 |
| Big
Youth has been deejaying ever since the
genre started to become a genre within
Reggae. His wailing voice is at his place
over the many dubby riddims and versions he
toasted over. This collection contains some
crucial and serious Big Youth
material. |

| BIG
YOUTH - LIONS DEN 10" |
| Usually
you don't get this stuff on mp3. Four
versions of this Twilight Circus riddim,
with a great vocal cut by Big Youth, a nice
version with Horns, an interesting remix and
a splashing DUB. |

| CLIVE
FIELD MARSHALL - POOR HOUSE ROCKERS |
| All
tunes on this one are crucial Rub a Dub
toasting. Fat music, nice words, and
strategically placed DUB effects. Hear the
topics and realize how some of these topics
have never lost their actuality. |

| DILLINGER
AT KING TUBBY'S |
| Dillinger
at it's finest, riding over King Tubby dubs
while chanting about this-and-that. Some
tracks also come with a separate DUB version
to complete this more than fine set. |
