PODCAST reviews

Podcasts are a great way to get yourself familiar with all kinds of artists and styles you might like to consider for your next purchase. It is also a very good way of experiencing Reggae in an alternative way as many podcasts are de facto non-stop mixes, often put together by skillful DJ's and other Sound System personnel. The Dubroom has reviewed many of the best podcast(ers) throughout the years, all of which you can discover in our reviewed podcast pages. Be sure to also check out the Dubroom's own podcast. THE ECHO CHAMBER - APRIL 18, 2007
DUBROOM PODCAST REVIEW

WWW, April 2007 - This episode of the great Echo Chamber brodcast has a special theme: WORD BEAT POWA, or in other words: here comes a DUB Poetry special.

BROADCASTER COMMENTS: Tonight the Echo Chamber presented the annual Word Beat I Powa dub poetry, beat poetry, and spoken word special. Of course, it was dub poetry that set the foundation of the show. Among the dub poets featured were Oku Onoura, Mutabaruka, Royal African Soldiers, Jean Binta Breeze, Malachi Smith, Tomlin Ellis, Glenville Bryan, Oliver Smith, Benjamin Zephaniah, and of course, the incomparable Linton Kwesi Johnson. Another slice of dub poetry was the track "Dilly Dally" from the Brooklyn Funk Essentials and featuring Everton Sylvester. But there was more than dub poetry.... As always, the Word Beat I Powa special included some Beat Poetry (with readings from Jack Kerouac) and other poetry. Maya Angelou's "Black Pearls" was layered on top of some choice dub from Up, Bustle, & Out. From Jah Wobble's excellent "Celtic Poets" album we featured the powerful "London Rain" as read by Ronnie Drew. In stark contrast to this cold, dark poem we had the steamy hot poem "Our Relationship" from Solange St. Croix (with heavy dub courtesy of Dr. Echo). Then there was the funky "Mr. Wiggles" from George Clinton & Parliament, and the Last Poets "C'mon Family" done with Cool Hipnoise. Another strong voice was Black Panther and Black Liberation Army leader Assata Shakur (on the track "Reluctant Warrior" by The Fire This Time). And how could one forget to include some "toasters" - the original Jamaican DJs? Of course we had some toasters, including U-Roy, I-Roy, and King Stitt. Finally the show was made complete with a special appearance by KFAI's own poet laureate, e.g.bailey. We featured 3 of e.g. bailey's poems: "Osiris", "Afrika", and "Never Here". What an eclectic mix of words...and beats...and Powa!
